What Is an Oil Press Machine?

An oil press machine is mechanical equipment used to extract oil from oilseeds, nuts and other oil-bearing materials.

The machine separates liquid oil from solid oil cake through pressure. The extracted crude oil can then be filtered, stored, refined or filled depending on the final product requirements.

An oil press machine may operate as:

  • A standalone machine
  • Part of a small oil mill
  • Part of a commercial oil processing plant
  • Part of an integrated pressing and refining line

Oil Press Machine Types

Screw Oil Press Machine

A screw oil press is a continuous physical pressing machine that uses a rotating screw to advance and squeeze oilseeds. It requires no chemical additives and produces a consistent oil yield. It is the primary oil-extraction equipment used in oil mills and small-to-medium-sized grain and oil processing plants, and supports both hot and cold pressing processes.

Hydraulic Oil Press Machine

Hydraulic oil presses are intermittent, static physical pressing machines that replicate the principles of traditional wooden presses. They rely on hydraulic cylinders to generate immense static pressure to squeeze oilseeds, resulting in minimal heat generated by friction. Designed primarily to produce high-quality cold-pressed oil, they are the equipment of choice for making sesame oil, nut oils, and specialty oils.

Small Oil Press Machine

A small oil press machine may be suitable for:

  • Start-up oil businesses
  • Farm cooperatives
  • Local edible oil brands
  • Small agricultural projects
  • Retail oil pressing shops
  • Small rural oil mills

The equipment configuration should match the expected raw material supply and daily production target.

Complete Oil Pressing Line

A complete line may include seed cleaning, conditioning, pressing, filtration, storage, refining and filling equipment.

This type of solution is suitable for customers who want to produce and sell packaged edible oil.

How Does an Oil Press Machine Work?

Screw Oil Press: After cleaning and roasting (hot pressing), the oilseeds enter the pressing chamber from the hopper; the rotating screw continuously pushes the oilseeds forward, and as the space within the pressing chamber gradually narrows, the pressure increases step by step, breaking down the oilseed cells through a combination of compression and friction-generated heat; The oil flows out through the gaps in the press cage, and a vacuum oil filtration system rapidly removes oil residue; the remaining solids form oil cake, which is continuously discharged through the cake outlet. The entire process—including feeding, oil extraction, and cake discharge—operates synchronously and continuously.

Hydraulic Oil Press: After pretreatment, the oilseeds are loaded into the pressing cylinder (which can be lined with filter cloth). The hydraulic power unit drives the cylinder to apply downward pressure gradually, causing the pressure to rise step by step, and the oil flows out through the oil-discharge slots in the cylinder. Once pressing is complete, the pressure is released, and the entire round oil cake is removed. The process operates on a batch-by-batch cycle: loading — pressing — cake discharge. The pressing process involves minimal temperature rise, which helps preserve the natural nutrients and aroma of the oilseeds.

Oil recovery is affected by:

  • Oilseed variety
  • Oil content
  • Moisture
  • Seed cleanliness
  • Preparation method
  • Pressing temperature
  • Screw or barrel configuration
  • Feed rate
  • Operating experience

For this reason, a fixed oil yield should not be used for every raw material or project.

Oilseeds Suitable for Oil Pressing

Fude Machinery oil press machines can be configured for different oil-bearing materials, including:

  • Peanut
  • Rapeseed and canola
  • Sunflower seed
  • Soybean
  • Sesame
  • Flaxseed
  • Cottonseed
  • Safflower seed
  • Tea seed
  • Perilla seed
  • Pumpkin seed
  • Selected nuts and specialty seeds

Different materials may require different preparation methods. Please provide the oilseed type before selecting the machine model.

For rapeseed projects, see our rapeseed oil press machine.

Cold Pressing and Hot Pressing

Cold Pressing

Cold pressing uses limited external heating before mechanical extraction.

It may be suitable for:

  • Specialty oil brands
  • Premium product lines
  • Small-batch production
  • Sesame oil
  • Nut oils
  • Flaxseed oil
  • Other products where a low-temperature process is important

The actual oil temperature depends on the seed, feed rate, pressing time, equipment design and operating conditions.

Hot Pressing

Hot pressing normally includes controlled heating or cooking before pressing.

It may be suitable for:

  • Commercial oil production
  • Higher daily throughput
  • Oilseeds that benefit from conditioning
  • Projects that prioritize stable production

The process temperature should be selected according to the raw material and product requirements.

How to Choose the Right Oil Press Machine

1. Confirm the Oilseed

Peanut, rapeseed, sunflower seed, soybean, sesame and nuts have different pressing characteristics.

2. Estimate the Required Capacity

Calculate:

  • Daily raw material supply
  • Expected operating hours
  • Seasonal availability
  • Desired finished oil volume
  • Future production growth

3. Select Cold or Hot Pressing

Choose a process according to your product positioning, oilseed characteristics and production target.

4. Consider Seed Preparation

Depending on the material, the preparation section may include:

  • Seed cleaner
  • Magnetic separator
  • Sheller
  • Crusher
  • Flaker
  • Dryer
  • Conditioner
  • Cooker

5. Plan Oil Filtration

Crude oil normally contains fine solids after pressing. A suitable filter is needed before storage or filling.

6. Check Power Supply

Confirm:

  • Local voltage
  • Frequency
  • Single-phase or three-phase power
  • Available electrical capacity
  • Motor starting method

7. Check Workshop Space

The layout should allow space for:

  • Raw material feeding
  • Machine operation
  • Oil collection
  • Cake discharge
  • Filter cleaning
  • Maintenance
  • Operator movement
  • Future expansion

Complete Oil Pressing Process

A complete oil production process may follow this flow:

Seed Cleaning → Crushing or Conditioning → Cooking if Required → Oil Pressing → Crude Oil Filtration → Storage → Refining or Filling

Supporting equipment may include:

  • Seed cleaning machine
  • Oilseed crusher
  • Seed cooker
  • Screw oil press
  • Hydraulic oil press
  • Oil filter
